Meet 26-year-Old Trey Chua Zheng Hong, who tells us all about his exciting career at IDA.

Why did you choose to pursue a career at IDA?

Trey Chua Zhen Hong: An ex-classmate from University joined IDA immediately after her graduation. When I inquired about her working environment, she told me that she loved it there! She mentioned that the work environment is flexible, not unlike a start-up. She also shared about how she was involved in a project which has the potential to save lives. Encouraged by her enthusiasm about the organisation, I decided that I’d give IDA a try and see how my skills could help the citizens of Singapore. And now, I’m happily employed here at IDA!

"The team I belong to generously allows developers to volunteer for the type of projects that they want to work on."

Tell us more about your job.

Trey: I belong to the Government Digital Services team, and my expertise lies in software development. I help create mobile and web solutions that range from bolstering team productivity to aiding the community. Most of my time is spent working on projects with various teams. Projects vary from mobile apps for the citizens, or web-based analytics portal for government agencies to monitor their products.

A typical day has me arriving in the morning to do a quick stand-up meeting to find out how everyone is doing. Subsequently, I’m left to my own devices on how to complete my list of tasks. The tasks usually involve implementing a set of features, such as a login system for a new app, or the main page of an interactive web analytics portal. I spend most of the day coding up such features and discussing technical details with team members as necessary. But sometimes when we need a break, we’ll just go to the table-tennis table just across the room to have a few rounds of table-tennis!

What opportunities are you enjoying under IDA?

Trey: The team I belong to generously allows developers to volunteer for the type of projects that they want to work on. Additionally, we’re also given a certain amount of freedom in how we carry out our work. Want to pick up a new programming language to solve the problem at hand? Sure, go ahead! Trying a new tool to solve an old problem? If it works, why not? As long as we can justify our actions, we’re free to do anything!

What is the most fulfilling part of your job?

Trey: I enjoy seeing the projects that I’ve been part of help people, even if it’s in a small way. Each and every project that is taken up by the team usually serves a higher purpose – be it to help make the lives of Singaporeans a little easier, or to drive the Smart Nation vision forward. Also, I like creating things. So seeing an idea go from conceptualization to a fully-fledged product is a reward in itself!
